Philly’s International Flower Show Promises to Green the City’s Urban Spaces

On March 4, Philadelphia will be a little greener. The 2012 Philadelphia International Flower Show promises to be in full bloom with orchids, heliconia and hundreds of plant species that are sure to make this year’s Hawaii: Islands of Aloha theme a must-see event. The show, which runs until March 11 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, will feature some delectable exhibits including an international array of food and wine from the finest French to farm-fresh organic; free daily wine and spirits tastings and live cooking demonstrations by the region’s best chefs; and a lovely Garden Tea,  just to name a few.

This year, guests can navigate the show with The Flower Show App for smartphones, which will provide users with free maps, schedules, special offers, show features, and parking advice. With so many exhibits and demonstrations to see, the app will help die-hard horticulture lovers be right on time for the free lectures and demos on topics such as organic gardening, edible landscapes, native plants, tree and lawn care, and ornamental horticulture.

Other than its sheer magnificence, the Philadelphia Flower Show actually has a noble purpose. Revenues generated help support the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s outreach program, Philadelphia Green. “PHS’s Green City Strategy promotes a comprehensive approach to revitalizing and maintaining the city’s green infrastructure as a key element in urban renewal. Philadelphia Green puts this approach into action by partnering with local residents, community groups, government, and businesses to: develop and preserve community green space; plant trees; create green streetscapes; revitalize parks and public spaces; reclaim abandoned land; provide long-term landscape management; and support open space planning” (PHS).

As the show approaches, Culture-ist will keep you up to date on important happenings and provide you with an inside peek into this fascinating event.
