There is no question that those of us who do not eat bugs are missing out on an important source of food. Incorporating insects into a healthy diet is common practice in many countries around the world, so why are Westerners so skittish about the idea? The “gross” factor seems to play a role in the way we perceive bugs as food, but there are many other things such as animals, when actually given a hard thought, are just as “gross” to consume (if we’re going to go there).
Research has shown that some bugs contain similar amounts of iron and protein as red meat and they offer a slew of vitamins and minerals that are found in both animal meats and vegetables. Check out this video from Visually, which does an excellent job of presenting entomophagy as a practical solution to many of the food issues we face today.
