The DIY sprouted foods trend is catching fire, and the bulk bins make it affordable to sprout your own grains at home without having to pay a high price for pre-packaged sprouted foods.

Organic brown rice purchased from the bulk bins of a grocery store is one of the most affordable and easiest foods to sprout at home. In fact, brown rice from the bulk bins is on average 38 percent less expensive than its packaged counterpart, according to a study conducted by the Portland State University¹s Food Industry Leadership Center. Sprouting at home can save bundles, while also providing a number of nutritional benefits, including vitamin B and C, folate, fiber and essential amino acids.

To sprout brown rice at home, follow these simple steps:

  1. Purchase organic rice from the bulk bins at your local store.
  2. Rinse the rice and place in a glass jar. Add warm water and cover loosely with a towel. Soak for 12 hours.
  3. Drain the soaking liquid and rinse with water.
  4. Return the rice to the container it was soaked in, cover it with water and repeat the draining-rinsing-soaking steps 2-3 times a day.
  5. After 1-2 days you will begin to see a tiny sprout! Harvest your rice.
  6. Cook the rice right away (cook time will be shorter) and store in the refrigerator.
