Yesterday, more than 400,000 people showed up for The People’s Climate March in NYC in lieu of the UN Climate Summit scheduled to take place on September 23. Approximately 1,500 organizations and 50,000 students traveled to NYC for this historic mobilization. Leonardo DiCaprio, Jane Goodall, Vandana Shiva and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and former Vice President Al Gore also came to show their support.
As a participant, I was most struck by the kind, fun-loving and compassionate atmosphere created by the hundreds of thousands of people marching to demand clean alternative energy solutions from their policymakers. Every sign waved by a participant shared an important powerful message, need not to be spoken, but only seen among a sea of changemakers. The march stretched over four miles, beginning at Columbus Circle, after a sunrise ceremony in Central Park, and ended at 42nd and 11th Avenue.
