Every year $5 billion of usable medications are destroyed, flushed down the toilet or dumped. SIRUM, a California-based nonprofit organization that facilitates the donations of medications, is working towards getting health facilities, pharmacies and hospitals, manufacturers and wholesalers, and others in the industry to donate these unopened unexpired medications to people in need.
Because SIRUM makes donation quick, easy, and free, most organizations not only save lives by donating their medications, but also save time and money over destruction which is often costly and time-consuming. The platform enables the closed, safe peer-to-peer redistribution of medications. Unlike traditional drug redistribution programs that rely on intermediaries, SIRUM connects donor facilities directly with recipient safety-net clinics.
SIRUM recently launched a campaign to raise awareness for its mission: to make access to medication affordable in the USA.
You can help spread awareness by sharing your story. Here’s how it works:
- Submit a story about a time you or a loved one could not afford medication HERE
- Share your story or other’s stories on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social platforms with a message like this:
Are you 1 of millions of Americans who struggle to afford medication? Share your story & make medication affordable: http://www.sirum.org/share-your-story/
- Visit the SIRUM website for updates on the campaign and to support the mission
- The last day to submit your story is March 5, 2015
On March 6, 2015 SIRUM will be approaching the US Congress with these stories with the hope of influencing the future of healthcare in the USA.
