We can trace chocolate as a coveted human snack back to the ancient Mayans; it was often found in the graves of kings, and the civilization collectively worshipped a goddess of chocolate. Thirteen-hundred years later, parts of our modern society are fighting civil wars, forcing slave labor and destroying precious land to cultivate cacao — all for our deep love of pretty packaged chocolate bars and treats. The history of the chocolate bar (seen below) shows how chocolate essentially shifted from a food fetish to a multi-billion dollar industry. Most of us deeply enjoy chocolate and why shouldn’t we? After all, it was a food of the Gods. We just need to make good choices about the companies we support, so that love, not wars are made from it.
