Texas is more than just a state to me; it’s a way of life and a place full of history and culture. While Texas may be better known for the Alamo and the Johnson Space Center, here are five less-celebrated, must-see sites to visit on your next trip to the Lone Star State.
1892 Bishop’s Palace in Galveston, Texas1892 Bishop’s Palace, Galveston
The Bishop’s Palace is one of my favorite sites in the state. The house was built between 1887 and 1892 for Colonel Walter Gresham, his wife, Josephine, and their nine kids. From its hand-carved staircases to the library, this three-story Victorian has some of the most beautiful architecture you’ll find in any home.
Downtown Georgetown Square, Georgetown
Located just a few miles north of Austin, Georgetown is truly one of Texas’s best-kept secrets. Downtown Georgetown has been voted the prettiest square in Texas many years in a row, and once you go, you’ll see why. Shoppers of all ages will find something to enjoy in one of the many local boutiques, and don’t forget the Red Poppy Festival in the spring.
Lucy in Disguise with Diamonds, Austin
If you love costumes and don’t think you should have to wait until October to dress up, you have to check out Lucy in Disguise with Diamonds. One of my favorite things to do when I lived in the Austin area was to visit Lucy in Disguise with Diamonds with friends and try on all the different wigs and costume jewelry sold there. To this day, I have never been to another costume shop like it. Like they say, Keep Austin Weird.
McGovern Centennial Gardens at Hermann Park in HoustonHermann Park Conservancy, Houston
I’m not much of an outdoors person, but that somewhat changed when I visited Hermann Park Conservancy for the first time. Located in the heart of Houston, not too far from the Texas Medical Center and Rice Village, this 445-acre park is truly breathtaking. From the fountains to the beautiful trees and flowers, this site makes it easy to feel peaceful and centered.
Rockwall Harbor, Rockwall
You would never guess this place would be just outside the Dallas city limits in North Texas. Rockwall Harbor is perfect for getting away from the city and enjoying some quiet time. With its beautiful boats docked in the harbor, gorgeous sunsets over the water, and great restaurants, Rockwall Harbor is definitely a place not to be missed.
